Local SEO for Roofers: A 25-Point Google Maps Scan in Parramatta, and Where 6 Reviews Beat 35

On 29 October 2026 I ran a Google Maps scan for “roofer near me” across 25 points around Parramatta. The business I tracked was Halo Roofing Services, a local roofer with 35 reviews and a 5-star rating.

The headline result is strong. The scan shows Halo in the top 3 at 13 of the 25 points and in the top 10 at 24 of them. Average rank: 4.0. Visibility Score: 74/100.

Scan summary for Halo Roofing Services: 13 points in the top 3, 11 in the top 4-10, average rank 4.0, Visibility Score 74/100

The most useful part wasn’t the good news, though. In one cluster of points to the south-west, a competitor with 6 reviews held #1 every time. Halo, with 35 reviews, sat anywhere from #2 to #11 at those same points.

A quick note before the numbers. This is one scan, from one pin, on one day. Rankings move, and “near me” results depend heavily on where the person searching is standing. Treat this as a snapshot, not a verdict on anyone’s business. I’m sharing it because it’s a clear real-world example of how far a roofer’s Google Maps reach actually goes.

Why “roofer near me” is a map problem, not just a website problem

Someone with water coming through the ceiling doesn’t go looking for your website. They type “roofer near me” and Google shows the map pack: three businesses, picked largely around where that phone is.

So a roofer doesn’t have one ranking. It has a different ranking on every street. Checking from your office, or from your own phone at home, tells you about one spot. Everywhere else is guesswork.

A good website still matters. But for this search, the map decides who gets seen first.

How I ran the scan (25 points, one pin, one day)

  • Keyword: roofer near me
  • Pin: central Parramatta
  • Grid: 25 points in a 5×5 layout, City (5km) coverage
  • Date: 29 October 2026

Halo doesn’t show a street address on Google, so I placed the pin in central Parramatta rather than on the business. Keep that in mind for everything below: distances are measured from the pin, not from wherever Google holds Halo’s address.

25-point scan grid over a map of Parramatta, from Constitution Hill in the north-west to Auburn in the south-east

At each of the 25 points, GeoRankLand checks who shows up for “roofer near me” as if someone were searching from that spot. The suburb labels come from the map location of each point, so some repeat (Merrylands SW appears four times) and some are broad. I’ve called the centre point “Parramatta (pin)” and the two points just east of it “Parramatta E”. The report labels these Sydney C and Sydney E, but all three sit in Parramatta.

Where the business ranks top 3

13 points. Halo is #1 at four of them: Westmead W, both Parramatta E points, and Rosehill. It’s #2 at North Parramatta N, one Oatlands NE point, one Merrylands SW point, one Granville S point and Little India. It’s #3 at one North Parramatta NE point, Westmead NW, one Merrylands SW point, and Parramatta (pin).

That last one is worth noticing. At the pin itself, Halo was #3, with Sydney Discount Roof Repair at #1.

Where it slips to positions 4-10

11 points. Halo is #4 at Oatlands NE, Wentworthville NW, North Parramatta NE and Granville SE; #5 at North Rocks and Wentworthville W; #6 at Northmead and one Merrylands SW point; #8 at Constitution Hill and Auburn; and #9 at one Granville S point.

Most of these sit on the edges of the grid. In the top row, from Constitution Hill across to Oatlands NE, Halo is outside the top 3 at four of five points. In the bottom row, from Merrylands SW across to Auburn, it’s outside the top 3 at all five.

Where it disappears completely

It doesn’t. The report counts zero points as not visible. Halo’s weakest result was #11 at one Merrylands SW point. That’s outside the top 10, so the heatmap marks it red, but the business still appeared in the results there.

The proximity wall: how far a roofer’s Google Maps reach goes

The report splits the grid into two rings around the pin:

Distance from pin

Avg rank

Top 3

Top 10

0-2.5 km

2.4

82%

100%

2.5-5 km

5.3

29%

93%

That’s the proximity wall. Inside 2.5km, Halo is in the top 3 at 82% of points. Beyond it, that drops to 29%.

It isn’t a cliff. Halo stays in the top 10 at 93% of the outer points. But the map pack only shows three businesses, so the drop from #2 to #5 is the difference between being seen and needing someone to tap “more places”.

One honest caveat: this wall is measured from my pin, not from Halo’s base. Its four #1 spots sit to the west (Westmead W) and east (Parramatta E, Rosehill) of centre. The scan can’t tell me where Google has Halo’s address, so the real wall may sit a little differently.

Radius analysis: average rank 2.4 and 82% top 3 within 2.5 km of the pin, average rank 5.3 and 29% top 3 from 2.5-5 km

Who wins the zones it loses (the competitor picture)

Eleven different businesses hold #1 somewhere on this grid. Nobody holds more than four points:

  • Halo Roofing Services: 4
  • Top Build Roofing: 4 (all four Merrylands SW points)
  • Innovate Roofing: 3
  • My Slate Roofing: 3
  • ProBuild Roofing: 2 (Constitution Hill and Auburn, opposite corners)
  • 2 OLD ROOFERS: 2 (both Wentworthville points)
  • Sydney Local Roofers: 2
  • Challenger Roofing: 2 (Granville S and Granville SE)
  • Auscity Roofing, Sydney Discount Roof Repair, Roof Restorers Parramatta: 1 each

That’s what a split local market looks like. Each roofer seems to own a pocket, likely the one nearest to them. The north belongs to a handful of names, the west to 2 OLD ROOFERS, the south to Challenger, and the south-west to Top Build.

Reviews: what the numbers in this scan show

The report has review data for two businesses:

  • Halo Roofing Services: 35 reviews, 5-star rating
  • Top Build Roofing: 6 reviews, 5-star rating

Same rating. A 29-review gap. Yet at all four Merrylands SW points, Top Build is #1 and Halo is #3, #2, #6 and #11.

Top Build Roofing competitor profile: #1 at 4 of 25 grid points, 16% of the scanned area, 6 reviews, 5-star rating

Honestly, Merrylands SW surprised me. I expected 35 reviews against 6 to win almost anywhere on this grid, and instead the smaller profile took every point there.

So in that pocket, review count didn’t decide the result. The scan doesn’t show where Top Build is based, but what usually explains this pattern is distance: a nearby business with fewer reviews often outranks a stronger profile that’s further away.

That doesn’t make reviews pointless. Across the whole grid, Halo leads at more points than any competitor, and a steady flow of genuine reviews is still one of the clearest signals a local business controls. The lesson is narrower: reviews help most where you’re already close, and they rarely override distance on their own.

Why roofing businesses don’t show on Google Maps in nearby suburbs

Google says local results come down to three things: relevance, distance and prominence. For a roofer, here’s how that usually plays out:

  1. Distance comes from your address, even when it’s hidden. Service-area businesses can hide their street address, but Google still knows it. Your reach grows outward from that point.
  2. Service areas are for customers, not rankings. Listing Auburn in your Google Business Profile tells people you work there. I wouldn’t count on it lifting your rank there.
  3. Relevance can be thin. If the primary category isn’t right, or the website never mentions the suburbs you work in, Google has little to connect you to searches there.
  4. Prominence is relative. Reviews, links and mentions all count, but they’re weighed against whoever is closest to the searcher.

What I’d fix first (local SEO for roofers, step by step)

If you’re working out how to rank higher on Google Maps in the suburbs where you slip, this is the order I’d work in. It’s general advice based on what the scan shows, not something Halo has done.

1. Re-scan from the real base. My pin was central Parramatta, not Halo’s address. Before changing anything, I’d run the same scan from where the business actually operates. That shows where the wall really sits.

No tool? You can get a rough version for free. Next time you’re on a job in Auburn or Constitution Hill, open Google Maps on your phone, search “roofer near me” and note where you appear. Ask a few customers in different suburbs to do the same and send you a screenshot. It’s slower and patchier than a grid, but it will tell you whether the drop-off is real before you spend money fixing it.

2. Push the #2 to #4 points first. These are closest to the top: Merrylands SW (#2 and #3), Granville S (#2), Little India (#2), and the #4 points in North Parramatta NE, Oatlands NE, Wentworthville NW and Granville SE. What usually helps is asking every customer for a review after every job, as a normal part of handover. No incentives, and no filtering for happy customers only.

3. Build real suburb pages for the outer ring. Constitution Hill (#8), Auburn (#8), Northmead (#6), North Rocks (#5) and Granville S (#9). Only for suburbs where the business genuinely works, with real jobs, photos and specifics. Not one template with the suburb name swapped.

4. Keep the Google Business Profile accurate and active. The right primary category, current job photos, and posts about recent work. Use the service area list to inform customers, not as a ranking lever.

5. Earn a few genuinely local links. What usually helps is being mentioned on sites tied to the area you want to reach: suppliers you buy from, a local sports club you sponsor, a community or news site that covers a job, or a trade association you belong to. A handful of real local mentions tends to do more than a long list of generic directories. I’d start with the outer suburbs where this scan shows #5 to #9, like North Rocks, Northmead and Granville S, since they’re the furthest from the top 3.

6. Watch Merrylands SW monthly. Top Build holds #1 at all four points there. If that’s down to distance, more reviews alone may not flip it. Re-scanning from the same pin each month shows whether anything is actually moving.

Run the same check on your own roofing business

If you’ve only ever checked your rank from your own office, you’ve seen one point out of many. The interesting part is usually what happens two or three suburbs over.
